This teapot is a rare opportunity for collectors of early Worcester. Extremely rare barrel shaped “blanc de chine' teapot with ridged sides, ridged loop handle and flat cover with leaf and opening flower knop. The inside has a simple hand-pierced 6 hole strainer in roughly oval formation. Marked on bottom with a blue “x” under glaze surrounded by an unglazed foot.
Measuring approximately 7.75 inches in length (spout to handle), 4.5 inches in height (including finial), and sitting on a 3.25 inch base. Previously auctioned by Sotheby’s in 1998, and containing multiple auction inventory stickers adhered to base.
Worcester left very little in the white a few small creamboats and sauceboats, 2 drum form teapot forms, some lovely figures and a truly spectacular white rococo-molded cistern, inspired by a silver shape. As Worcester concentrated more on enamel and blue and white decoration, there is speculation that the few rare Worcester white wares might be unfinished. Photos include photos of references to teapot shape from Godfrey Godden’s “Caughley & Worcester Porcelains 1775-1800” found on pages 314, 332 and 333. I note damage to flower knop, 3 small chips to inside rim, a nick to underside of lid and a small crack to spout as shown in photos. Additional photos available on request.
